Fingerprint Registry

About

Fingerprint Registry is a public record of SHA-256 fingerprints, each sealed with an independent timestamp. It was created by Yannick Langlois.

What it does

You give it a file, a piece of text or a crypto wallet address. It records the SHA-256 fingerprint in an append-only, hash-chained public ledger and asks an independent timestamp authority (freetsa.org) for an RFC 3161 token.

Anyone can later check that the same fingerprint was on the ledger at that moment, and that the ledger has not been altered since.

What it does not prove

A fingerprint shows that some exact content existed by a given time. It does not prove who created it, whether it is true, or when it was first written. Names entered on the site are self-declared and not verified.

Evidence we collect

When a saved record no longer matches its SHA-256 code, or someone submits data that doesn't match a fingerprint, uses an invalid key or tries to break in, we save it as evidence: what was submitted, what the ledger expected, the time, the IP address and the browser details. Tampered wallet records are kept as a full copy before a fresh snapshot is added to the ledger.

Fingerprint Registry

SHA-256 identifies content. An RFC 3161 token and a hash-chained ledger anchor it in time. Neither proves authorship or truth.

Timestamp authority: freetsa.org · RFC 3161 · SHA-256

Verifiable offline with OpenSSL
